No fewer than 13 passengers killed and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's major public works projects.

The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The development of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised ongoing questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party called for an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party declared that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the president asserted that the train had been running in total adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
