Puzzling Pink Sludge on Isolated Tasmanian Shoreline Raises Concerns of Potential Algae Outbreak
Officials in Tasmania are working to identify a pink slime that has appeared on a remote shoreline, with a number of researchers worried it could be an phytoplankton proliferation.
Broad Presence Across Shore
The rosy-colored ooze was found on a stretch of a southern bay about 60km south of the city. A similar sludge has also been documented on sections of Little Roaring Beach and an additional coastal site.
Examples Collected for Examination
Examples have been collected and submitted to the Environment Protection Authority for testing. A representative commented that "algal blooms are a natural event in reaction to shifts in food sources, warmth, precipitation or illumination".
"The events are sometimes called crimson or rosy tides because the blooms can turn the water crimson," the official added. "Only some algal blooms are dangerous, with many species serving as a key source of energy for creatures in the marine food web."
"The usual source of red tides in Tasmanian waters is the oceanic algae Noctiluca scintillans, which can create luminous nighttime effects at night."
Increasing Occurrence Associated with Global Warming
Algal blooms happen naturally but their occurrence has grown in recent times, partially due to climate change and contamination that combine to create mineral-filled seas ideal for the quick expansion of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a marine plant that typically function as the ocean's detritus consumers. During a proliferation, there is a quick expansion in their populations that disturbs the normal functioning of aquatic systems.
These phenomena have been compared to marine infernos and can persist in growing as long as the environment is suitable. In worse situations, delicate ocean habitats can be destroyed as sea creatures is destroyed or smothered, providing more minerals for the outbreak.
Past Severe Outbreak in a neighboring state
South Australia recently confronted a devastating algae outbreak along its coastal region after a succession of sea temperature spikes, which spread across thousands of square kilometres. The event left surfers with irritated eyes and severe coughing and may have eliminated up to numerous aquatic species across hundreds of species, according to agency assessments.
Scientist Opinion on the Current Situation
A marine expert, who helped investigate the start of the previous algal bloom stated, based on photos of the current situation, the most likely species involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a form of dinoflagellate also known as "marine shimmer".
"There have been numerous of these outbreaks around the island of late," she said.
The expert stated the algae did not generate poisons like the species involved in the previous harmful algal bloom, but it does eat small invertebrates and "numerous fish eggs", meaning aquatic creatures were most at risk.
"It's common to observe a proliferation of this algae after a proliferation of something else, or an event such as a salmon or coral spawning event," she noted.
Appeals for Investigation and Public Safety
A campaigner, who collected samples of the magenta ooze in the state, stated it appeared the suspected bloom had "grown significantly" and indicated the aquaculture sector was the most likely culprit, pointing to comparable events elsewhere.
"So Tasmania needs to issue a firm alert here, the government and the regulators need to react to this. We need to study the examples we've collected and we need to notify the people here," she emphasized.
The scientist said she had concerns for people's well-being after experiencing a prickling feeling along her arms and face while being exposed with contaminated seawater.
Reports of Dead Marine Life and Calls for Government Intervention
An environmental foundation has stated lifeless animals and expired organisms washing ashore, with a prominent conservationist describing the event as an "ecological crisis" and urging the state premier to visit and "lead the reaction that authorities must be undertaking".
"The leader needs to know this is a catastrophe in the unfolding, economically as well as ecologically."
Official Reaction
Talking with reporters, the leader stated he was uninformed of any connections between the event and the salmon industry, stating laboratory analysis was necessary before determinations could be drawn.
"We must make certain our aquatic environments are safe for nature and viable," he added.
"Our coastal assets across the island are our treasures and we need to make sure the community and our industry can live together to use our aquatic resources effectively and responsibly."
