Users Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such drugs need to be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs explains the heightened regain.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

People who have come off the medication report a powerful return of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts stress that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
