Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Competitors will gain the option to contest particular decisions from the official, mirroring the practice already in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step follows just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other situations, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can request.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
