During an initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” the metropolis, ushering in “a different age” and an bold beginning to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Mayor

• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households

The projected $10 billion cost of these initiatives may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
